Brand New Guys

The role of hip-hop according to: Brand New Guys

Brand New Guys takes visitors back to the year 1996, when various developments surrounding hip-hop came together in the city. The project is titled Stacked, and in it, the Rotterdam collective highlights Nighttown, record shop Billboard Records, and the Odeon recording studios. Three hotspots shaped by hip-hop through dance and music. Cye Wong-Loi-Sing and Taylor Early explain what Brand New Guys stands for and what to expect in their museum room.

Brand New Guys is a small creative agency, focusing on the intersection of culture, storytelling, and technology. Community-oriented, Brand New Guys is helmed by Cye Wong-Loi-Sing, a Rotterdam native through and through.

‘In The World is Yours!, we aim to connect the dots of the city’s history through the storied memories of Rotterdam’s hip-hop legends.

Building on the previous generation’s wisdom and technology, we’ve built an interactive Totem in the exhibition space, into which visitors can insert floppy disks and select the interview they want to play.

The interviews featured in the Totem give visitors the opportunity to engage with great names, hear their deepest thoughts about the community and the city they live in, and in time come to understand Rotterdam’s DNA.

Hip hop is a reflection of the world around it, truly a product of the times across generations, a time capsule even. But more than that its evergreen – hip-hop is a lifestyle, a language, and a way to connect to each other in the past, present, and future.’
